Mayanmar Earthquake Highlights
- A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, per the United States Geological Survey, sending tremors across Thailand and into nearby Chinese provinces.
- In Bangkok, one person died and 50 were injured when a high-rise collapsed after the quake, as reported by Thai authorities.
- Myanmar faced a 6.4-magnitude aftershock 12 minutes later, per USGS, and its capacity to handle such a disaster is limited due to poverty and a four-year civil war following a military coup.
Several Mandalay residents say they saw buildings collapse after quake
Multiple residents in Myanmar’s Mandalay told Reuters they saw buildings fall after a massive 7.7-magnitude quake hit near the city.
A witness in Mandalay, home to at least 1.5 million, described watching a five-story structure “crumple right before my eyes.”
“We rushed out of the house when the shaking began,” the witness shared with Reuters. “Everyone in my area is on the streets, too scared to return indoors.”
Htet Naing Oo, another Mandalay resident, reported a tea shop collapsing with people trapped inside. “We couldn’t get in,” she told Reuters. “It’s a dire situation.”
Myanmar officials have not yet provided any updates on the extent of the damage.
A Myanmar Fire Services Department officer told Reuters that searches for casualties and destruction had started in Yangon. “We don’t have details yet,” they noted.
One dead, one missing, and 50 injured in Bangkok building collapse after quake
Emergency crews reached the location of a building collapse in Bangkok.
Thai authorities reported one death and 50 injuries after a high-rise under construction in Bangkok’s capital fell due to a strong earthquake striking nearby Myanmar on Friday.
Bangkok’s National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEM) stated that one individual is still buried beneath debris following the collapse of the high-rise in Chatuchak Park.
The NIEM had previously indicated that 43 people were caught inside the structure when it crumbled in moments.
Passengers take cover and evacuate Myanmar’s Mandalay airport
Social media videos captured chaotic scenes at the airport, showing dozens of passengers crouching on the tarmac near aircraft, seeking safety as the ground trembled beneath them. The footage depicted travelers and airport staff reacting to the sudden jolts, with loud alarm bells ringing out in the background, signaling an emergency evacuation.
Inside the terminal, reports and posts on X indicate significant damage, including parts of the ceiling collapsing, which likely prompted the urgent exodus to open ground where the risk of falling debris was lower.
Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city with a population of about 1.5 million, is a cultural and economic hub, and its international airport serves as a key transportation link. The earthquake’s proximity—approximately 17 kilometers from the city—disrupted normal operations, with phone lines going down and initial assessments of damage delayed due to the country’s ongoing civil war and limited infrastructure.
The evacuation was a direct response to the immediate danger posed by the quake, as passengers and staff prioritized safety amid uncertainty about the structural integrity of the airport buildings. This event underscores the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity, compounded by Myanmar’s challenges in managing large-scale disasters.
Quake hit close to one of Myanmar’s cultural treasures, the historic city of Mandalay
Mandalay, Myanmar’s cultural and spiritual heart, hosts about one million residents, Buddhist monasteries, and a vast palace once occupied by its former kings.
Phone services have been disrupted since a 7.7-magnitude quake struck the nearby Sagaing region.
Situated along the grand Irrawaddy River, Mandalay is a center for key monasteries essential to the spiritual fabric of Buddhist-majority Myanmar.
The old Royal Palace was the seat of Myanmar’s kings—then called Burma—until British colonial forces overtook the kingdom in 1885, exiling the final king to India.
The city also serves as a vital trade and logistics nexus.
It marks the endpoint of a crucial trade corridor weaving through Shan state’s hills to China, Myanmar’s primary trade ally.
High-rise pool spills water onto Bangkok streets following quake
Water from a high-rise pool poured onto the streets of Bangkok after a powerful 7.7 magnitude quake struck central Myanmar, sending tremors throughout neighboring Thailand.
Video shared on X showed water spilling over the edge of the swimming pool and cascading down several floors onto the streets below.
The video was filmed by a witness from a nearby building.
43 people trapped after building collapse in Bangkok
Emergency responders report that 50 individuals were inside a collapsed building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak Park.
The National Institute for Emergency Medicine indicates that 43 people remain trapped in the structure, with seven others injured.
A video shared on X displayed the collapse of a building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak Park.
The structure, seemingly under construction, crumbled within seconds.
“It shook tremendously,” a Yangon resident remarked about the intense quake.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is leading an emergency session after a significant earthquake rocked neighboring Myanmar.
Shaking reached across Thailand, felt in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, as reported by locals and the national disaster agency.
The prime minister was attending a meeting in Phuket when the earthquake occurred.
Shaking from the earthquake reached distant locations, including Thailand’s Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday sent tremors rippling as far as Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, where chaotic scenes unfolded in an apartment building.
Light fixtures swayed violently as residents hurried to evacuate. People were seen standing outside an office building in Bangkok following the quake’s impact.
In Thailand’s northern city of Chiang Mai, an unnamed resident recounted:
“I sensed the shaking in my room for about 10 seconds before realizing I couldn’t stay indoors. I quickly ran out to the street.”
Myanmar hit by 6.4-magnitude aftershock
Myanmar experienced a robust 6.4-magnitude aftershock near Sagaing, striking approximately 12 minutes after the first earthquake on Friday afternoon, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
An unnamed resident of Yangon, Myanmar’s biggest city, shared that:
“The shaking lasted about a minute, and then we dashed out of the building.
“We noticed others fleeing their buildings as well. It hit out of nowhere and felt extremely intense.”
7.7-magnitude earthquake jolted central Myanmar
A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake jolted central Myanmar on Friday afternoon, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The seismic event occurred approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) north-northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, hitting at about 12:50 p.m. local time, per USGS data.
Roughly 12 minutes later, a significant 6.4-magnitude aftershock rattled the same region, USGS confirmed.
The shaking extended hundreds of kilometers, reaching as far as Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city.
