Former UPMC Doctor Arrested in Hawaii for Attempted Murder of Wife

Hawaii News Now – Former UPMC Doctor Hawaii, Gerhardt Konig UPMC , Doctor Hawaii News : A former University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) doctor, Gerhardt Konig, was arrested in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 24, 2025, accused of attempting to murder his wife during a hike. 

Shocking Incident on Oahu Hiking Trail

Gerhardt Konig, the 46-year-old anesthesiologist allegedly tried to push his 36-year-old wife, Arielle Konig, off a cliff at the Pali Lookout, a popular scenic trail on Oahu, and struck her in the head with a rock, leaving her in critical condition.

Details of the Assault

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the incident unfolded around 10 a.m. when Konig reportedly attacked his wife after she refused to take a photo with him. 

Reports indicate he also attempted to jab her with syringes during the assault. Arielle, a nuclear engineer with TerraPower, managed to communicate to EMTs that she had been punched and hit with a rock.

Konig fled the scene but was apprehended after a six-hour manhunt and a brief foot chase near Pali Highway.

Background and Professional Ties

Konig, originally from Pittsburgh, worked as an anesthesiologist at UPMC and was an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh until over two years ago, when he relocated with his family to Maui for a new position with The Anesthesia Medical Group. 

UPMC confirmed he has not been employed by them for more than two years. 

Following the incident, his Maui employer suspended him pending investigation. His medical license in Hawaii, issued in September, remains active as of March 25, 2025.

Community and Legal Response

The assault has stunned former neighbors in Mount Lebanon, Pittsburgh, who described the Konigs as friendly, per CBS Pittsburgh. Arielle remains hospitalized in critical condition, while charges against Konig are still pending as of March 26, 2025. 

The Pali Lookout was closed for the remainder of March 24 following the incident, according to Hawaii’s Division of State Parks. This developing story has sparked widespread discussion about domestic violence and tourist safety at iconic sites, with updates continuing to emerge as of 1:47 AM HST today.
